Client spotlight

September 5, 2018

Diana came to SJPC‘s General Parenting Program (GPP) voluntarily in December of 2017. Diana had been looking for a program that would help her with her 9 year old son, Steve, who had begun to be rebellious. Gloria Silva, who works at Abilis in Stamford and is a volunteer facilitator at SJPC, recommended for Diana to attend SJPC‘s parenting classes.   After attending classes in SJPC’s Spanish GPP for two months, Diana decided to also participate in a pilot Women’s Support Group that SJPC was offering in partnership with The Center for Sexual Assault, Crisis Counseling and Education.  Diana found the support and the information she obtained at SJPC so helpful that she encouraged her husband, Manuel, to join SJPC’s Spanish 24/7 Dad program.  In February 2018, Manuel came to class with some reservations but by the second class found himself engaged in the topics and the information easy to understand and apply. He loved the concept of having Latino men support each other and learn together.

While Manuel was attending class, Diana and her son, Steve, began volunteering at SJPC serving dinner to our clients on Wednesday nights. She and Manuel felt that it was important to show Steve the value of giving back.

Diana has shared with us that they learned as a couple the significance of working together, setting rules and structure before a problem arises, communicating effectively and having patience with each other.  Most importantly she said they learned the value of having fun with their son.   They now understand that when a child misbehaves it’s generally the child reacting to what is happening around them.

Diana and Manual’s choice to listen and learn has generated a happier child and a healthier home for them all to live in. They are true examples of how working together, as husband and wife, can achieve the ultimate goal of having a healthier, happier relationship with each other as well as their child.

Congratulations to Diana and Manuel!
